“Nutrient pollution is one of America's most widespread, costly and challenging environmental problems, and is caused by excess nitrogen and phosphorus in the air and water." - United States Environmental Protection Agency, March 2017
Every single pound matters....
A visible effect of nutrient contamination is algae
in the water which contaminates drinking
water supplies like Lake Erie
Phosphorus and Nitrogen each have a contribution to the creation of algae. Without both, algae will not grow.
Phosphorus removal is typically focused on the removal of sediments, a process that in itself liberates additional phosphorus to the water column, or other technologies that lower water column phosphorus, but leave the phosphorus in the ecosystem. The CleanWater process is compatible with and complimentary to sediment removal efforts and has the added advantage of removing soluble phosphorus from the ecosystem permanently.
